Harvey’s

Sustainable Packaging Across a National Brand

While working at Harvey’s I helped lead the creative development of the brand's new sustainable packaging system as part of the national Helping Keep Canada a Beautiful Thing initiative. The project marked Harvey's transition from traditional packaging to a 100% Canadian made, fully recyclable, and compostable packaging program, reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainability and Canadian heritage while maintaining a consistent brand experience across restaurants nationwide.

Beginning with the core fry and onion ring packaging, the visual system expanded to takeout bags, combo containers, beverage packaging, and dipping sauce labels, creating a cohesive family of production-ready packaging used in restaurants across Canada.

Phase One

Building the Core Packaging System

The project began with Harvey's core food packaging, including fry cartons, onion ring containers, and the signature Frings packaging. These highly visible items established the visual language for the sustainability initiative, balancing clear product recognition with messaging that communicated Harvey's commitment to keeping Canada beautiful.

Working within a strict colour production print process on recycled kraft substrates, every package was designed to maximize readability, and maintain brand consistency while communicating the brands commitment to sustainability. Working directly with French teams and translators, every design was able to accommodate English, French, and bilingual production requirements.

Phase Two

Expanding the Packaging Family

Once the foundational packaging system was approved, the visual language expanded across additional customer touchpoints, including national takeout bags, beverage packaging, and other operational materials. Consistent typography, messaging, and layout principles ensured every package felt unmistakably Harvey's while reinforcing the brand's environmental commitments at every stage of the customer experience.

Production & Print

Every package was developed as production-ready artwork, working directly with packaging vendors to prepare dielines, review proofs, and ensure accurate press output across multiple packaging formats. Because the new packaging utilized 100% recycled, compostable Canadian-made materials, careful attention was given to ink coverage, legibility, and colour consistency on kraft substrates. A restricted three-colour print process required thoughtful use of typography, hierarchy, and graphic elements to maximize impact while remaining efficient to manufacture.

Product Labels

In addition to the newly developed packaging rollout, I developed a complete family of seven dipping sauce labels which launched at the same time, replacing the older branded sauces. These newly designed dipping packets were produced using post-consumer recycled materials which aligned with the new packaging initiative. This allowed me to create a scalable label system that clearly differentiated each flavour while maintaining consistent branding across the product line, and allowing it to scale for new sauces in the future. Each label was prepared as production-ready artwork, incorporating ingredient hierarchy, regulatory information, and manufacturing specifications to support national production.
